AEO vs. GEO vs. AI SEO: What the Terms Mean for Your Business
AEO, GEO and AI SEO all describe getting found in AI answers. Learn what each term means, how they relate to SEO, and which matters for service businesses.
Short answer: AEO (answer engine optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization) and AI SEO are three names for nearly the same goal: helping your business get found, understood and recommended when people ask AI assistants like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews a question. AEO is the most common term among agencies, GEO comes from academic research, and AI SEO is a marketing label. All three build on traditional SEO. For a service business, the label matters far less than the work behind it.
Why there are three names for one idea
When a new kind of search appears, the industry rarely agrees on a name right away. AI assistants that write answers, rather than listing links, created exactly that situation. Different groups started describing the same work with different words. Knowing what each one means helps you compare agencies, read articles and avoid paying for a rebrand of the same service.
What AEO means
Answer engine optimization focuses on the "answer engine": a tool that responds to a question with a direct answer. The goal of AEO is for your business to be the answer, or one of the businesses named in it. AEO work usually covers clear, question-based content, consistent business facts, structured data and mentions on trusted third-party sites. We explain it in more depth in What Is AEO and on our page about what answer engine optimization is.
What GEO means
Generative engine optimization comes from a 2023 research paper, "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," by Aggarwal and colleagues (arXiv 2311.09735). The authors described generative engines as systems that gather information from multiple sources and summarize it into one response. They tested ways content creators could improve how visible their content is inside those responses. In their experiments, adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics were among the methods that improved visibility.
So GEO describes the same goal as AEO, with a research-driven emphasis on how generative models choose and present sources.
What AI SEO means
"AI SEO" is used in two different ways, which causes confusion:
- SEO for AI search: optimizing so your content appears in AI-generated answers. This is the same as AEO or GEO.
- SEO done with AI tools: using AI software to research keywords or write content for traditional search.
When an agency says "AI SEO," ask which one they mean. The first is about where you show up. The second is about how the work gets done.
How all three relate to traditional SEO
None of these replaces SEO. Google says the same foundational SEO best practices apply to its AI features, and that there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode (Google Search Central, "AI features and your website"). In its May 2025 guidance, Google also advised site owners to focus on unique, satisfying content, a good page experience and making sure Google can crawl and index their pages (Google Search Central Blog, "Top ways to ensure your content performs well in Google's AI experiences on Search").
What changes is the emphasis. Traditional SEO measures where a page ranks in a list. AEO and GEO measure whether your business is mentioned or cited inside a written answer. Our post on AI vs. SEO covers how the two work together.
A side-by-side summary
| Term | Origin | Main goal | Typical measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search marketing | Rank pages in search results | Rankings, organic traffic |
| AEO | Agency and marketing usage | Be the answer or be named in it | Mentions and citations in AI answers |
| GEO | Academic research (2023) | Be visible in generative responses | Visibility of your content in AI responses |
| AI SEO | Marketing label | Either of the above, or SEO done with AI tools | Depends on the definition |
Which one matters for a service business?
For a plumber, law firm, real estate team or home services company, the practical question is simple: when a customer asks an AI assistant who to hire, does your business come up? The work that answers that question is the same whatever it's called:
- Make your site readable. AI tools and search engines need to crawl your pages, so check robots.txt and keep key content in the page itself.
- Answer real questions. Each service page should start with a direct answer and then give specifics.
- Keep your facts consistent. Your name, phone, service area and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Earn third-party mentions. AI answers often cite reviews, directories and articles on other sites.
- Measure regularly. Track the same questions over time across several AI engines.

Watch out for label games
Because the terms are new, some providers sell the same service under a new name at a higher price, or promise guaranteed placement in AI answers. Nobody controls what an AI assistant says, and answers vary from one run to the next. Ask what work will be done, which engines and questions will be tracked, and how results will be reported.
How Visionary AI Partners uses these terms

Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice, nearly. Both aim to get your business included in AI-generated answers. GEO is the term used in the 2023 research paper; AEO is more common among agencies.
Do I still need SEO if I invest in AEO?
Yes. Google says the same foundational SEO practices apply to its AI features, so strong SEO supports AEO.
What does "AI SEO" mean?
It can mean optimizing for AI search, or doing SEO with AI tools. Ask any provider which one they mean.
Which AI assistants should a service business care about?
The ones your customers use. Many businesses track ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews.
