How to Get Your Business to Show Up in Perplexity
Perplexity cites sources in every answer. Learn how service businesses can make their site crawlable, citable and consistent so Perplexity finds them.
Short answer: Perplexity builds each answer from web pages it can find and read, and it shows those sources to the user. To show up, your business needs pages Perplexity's crawler is allowed to reach, content that directly answers the questions your customers ask, business facts that match across the web, and mentions on the third-party sites Perplexity already cites in your industry. No one can guarantee a mention, but you can make one far more likely.
Why Perplexity matters for service businesses
Perplexity is an answer engine. Instead of a page of links, it writes a short answer and lists the sources it used. That makes it different from a classic search result in two ways. First, being cited puts your website in front of someone who is already asking a specific question. Second, if your business is not among the sources, you may not be considered at all. That is why Perplexity is one of the engines we track for clients. For a broader look, see how to rank in ChatGPT and Perplexity, and our post on generative engine optimization.
Step 1: Make sure Perplexity can crawl your site
Perplexity documents its crawler, PerplexityBot, and says it is used to surface and link websites in Perplexity search results (Perplexity, "Perplexity Crawlers"). Check three things:
- robots.txt. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see a rule that disallows PerplexityBot, or a blanket rule that blocks all bots, your pages may not be eligible to appear.
- Firewall and bot protection. Some security settings block unknown crawlers automatically. Ask your web host or developer whether AI crawlers are being challenged or blocked.
- Readable pages. If your main content only appears after heavy scripts run, a crawler may see a mostly empty page. Important service information should be in the page HTML.
Step 2: Answer the questions people actually ask
Perplexity users type full questions, such as "Who can install a crawl space dehumidifier near me?" or "What does an AI receptionist cost?" Pages that answer those questions clearly, near the top, are easier to cite. For each core service:
- Put a one- or two-sentence answer at the top of the page.
- Use headings that match real questions.
- Include specifics: service area, what is included, how the process works, and how to get started.
- Cite credible sources when you state facts. The research behind GEO found that adding citations and statistics from credible sources improved visibility in generative answers in the authors' tests (Aggarwal et al., arXiv 2311.09735).
Google's guidance on helpful, people-first content is a good standard here as well (Google Search Central, "Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content").
Step 3: Keep your business facts consistent
Answer engines compare information across sources. If your website lists one phone number, your Google Business Profile another and a directory a third, an engine has less reason to trust any of them. Make sure your business name, address or service area, phone number, hours and services match everywhere. Google's guidelines for representing your business on Google are a useful checklist (Google Business Profile Help, "Guidelines for representing your business on Google").
Structured data also helps machines read your facts. Google documents LocalBusiness structured data for business details such as name, address and opening hours (Google Search Central, "Local Business structured data").
Step 4: Earn mentions on sites Perplexity already cites
In most industries, a short list of websites gets cited again and again: comparison articles, directories, review sites, local news and community forums. Look at the sources Perplexity shows for questions in your category. If your competitors appear in those sources and you do not, that is your outreach list. Focus on accurate listings and genuine coverage, not paid placements you would not want a customer to see.
Step 5: Measure, and treat missing data as missing
Check a fixed set of questions on a regular schedule and record whether your business is mentioned and which URLs are cited. Use the same wording each time so results are comparable. Our 10-minute check is an easy start.
If you use a monitoring tool, watch for collection gaps. Tracking tools sometimes fail to collect results from an engine for days at a time. A missing run is missing data, not a drop to zero, and it should be excluded from conclusions until fresh data returns.
Common reasons a business doesn't show up
- The site blocks AI crawlers, often by accident.
- Service pages are thin or never answer the actual question.
- Business details conflict across the web.
- The business has few or no third-party mentions.
- The site is new, so it has little history or coverage.

Frequently asked questions
Does Perplexity use Google results?
Perplexity runs its own crawler, PerplexityBot, to find and link websites. Your general search visibility still matters, because well-structured, well-linked pages tend to be easier to find.
Can I pay to appear in Perplexity answers?
Organic citations in Perplexity answers are not something you can buy. Focus on crawl access, clear content and real third-party mentions.
How quickly can my business start showing up?
It varies. Fixing a robots.txt block can matter quickly once pages are recrawled. Building third-party mentions takes longer.
Should I block AI crawlers to protect my content?
That is a business decision. Blocking PerplexityBot may keep your pages out of Perplexity's search results, so weigh that before you block it.
