AI Visibility (AEO)

What an AI Visibility Audit Should Include for a Service Business

By Beth Moran & Ed Moran

An AI visibility audit shows whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI recommend your business. Here is what a useful audit covers and what to ask for.

Short answer: An AI visibility audit measures whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Copilot mention or cite your business when customers ask about your services, and explains why or why not. A useful audit covers five areas: the questions tested, the engines tested, your website's technical access, the consistency of your business facts, and the third-party sources that AI engines cite in your market. It should end with a prioritized list of fixes, not just a score.

Why service businesses need an audit now

More customers start with a question to an AI assistant, such as "Who's the best HVAC company near me?" or "Which law firms handle estate planning in my town?" The assistant answers with a few names. If yours is not one of them, you may never know you were left out. An audit turns that unknown into something you can measure. If you want to try a quick version yourself first, use our 10-minute self-check.

1. The questions tested

The audit is only as good as its questions. Look for:

  • Real buyer questions, in plain language, for each main service.
  • Local versions, such as "[service] in [town]," if you serve a defined area.
  • Comparison questions, such as "best [service] company for [need]."
  • A brand question, such as "What is [your business]?", reported separately so it doesn't inflate results.
  • A fixed list, so later checks can be compared fairly.

2. The engines tested

Different assistants use different sources. A solid audit names each engine it checked and the date. It should also say what happens when a tool fails to collect results. Missing results should be labeled as missing data, not counted as zero visibility.

3. Technical access

AI search tools need to reach your pages. The audit should check:

  • robots.txt and crawler access. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search results (OpenAI, "Overview of OpenAI Crawlers"), and Perplexity documents PerplexityBot (Perplexity, "Perplexity Crawlers"). Blocking them can keep your pages out of those answers.
  • Indexing in Google. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal Search eligibility (Google Search Central, "AI features and your website"). If a page isn't indexed, it is unlikely to be shown.
  • Readable content. Key information should be in the page HTML, not only loaded by scripts.
  • Structured data, such as LocalBusiness markup (Google Search Central, "Local Business structured data").

Many of these issues come from how the website was built. Our post on AI-created websites covers common problems, and our AI-ready website builds are designed to avoid them.

4. Business facts and entity consistency

AI engines compare what different sources say about you. The audit should compare your name, phone number, address or service area, hours and services across your website, Google Business Profile and major directories. Google's guidelines for representing your business on Google set a good baseline (Google Business Profile Help).

5. Content and citations

The audit should answer two questions:

  • Do your pages answer the questions being tested? Pages should give a direct answer near the top, then supporting detail.
  • Which outside sources get cited, and are you in them? List the articles, directories and review sites AI engines cite for your category, and note which competitors appear there.

For the signals that matter most, see what makes AI recommend a business.

What you should receive

  • The full list of questions and engines tested, with dates.
  • Whether you were mentioned or cited for each, and by which URL.
  • Which competitors were named instead.
  • Technical findings with plain-language explanations.
  • A prioritized fix list: quick wins, then longer-term work.
  • A note on any missing or failed data.

Questions to ask an audit provider

  • Can I see the actual AI answers, not just a score?
  • Will you re-run the same questions later so we can compare?
  • How do you treat engine outages?
  • Is the fix list specific to my business?
  • What does follow-up work cost, and is it optional?

Be cautious of audits that promise you will be "#1 in ChatGPT." AI answers vary from one run to the next, and nobody controls them.

Frequently asked questions

How is an AI visibility audit different from an SEO audit?

An SEO audit focuses on rankings in search results. An AI visibility audit checks whether AI assistants mention or cite your business in written answers, and why.

How often should I repeat the audit?

Many businesses re-check monthly or quarterly using the same questions so results are comparable.

Do I need to fix everything the audit finds?

No. Start with the items most likely to matter, such as blocked crawlers or conflicting business details.

Will an audit improve my visibility by itself?

No. It shows where you stand and what to fix. Visibility improves when the fixes are made.
